Hi all

Pauls comments concerning grease lubrication are quite correct.  However it has nothing to do with the noise these new gearboxes generate.  Nor has whether you are going  forwards or backwards and it is most certainly nothing to worry about.

The new high efficiency gearboxes are fitted with patented Davall Spiradrive gearsets.  These are hardened steel offset spiral crown wheels being driven by multi start, hardened steel leadscrews.  Because of the offset, the gear mesh condition is slightly different in one direction than it is in the other.  This why the gearboxes generate more noise in one direction than the other.  On some models this will be going forwards and on some it will be in reverse.

The source of the noise is micro fine ripples in the surface of the gear teeth on the crown wheel.  These ripples tend become smoothed out as the gears bed in, and the gearboxes get quieter and quieter.  This is completely different from what occurs when gears wear out.  We know this from experience gained by Davall supplying main gun stabilising systems for NATO main battle tanks.  These use an identical gear system.

Armortek  (and Davall) are keen to improve this initial noise issue on future builds, and we have been advised that Davall have invested in a new complex CNC gear finishing machine to improve the surface finish of the gear wheels.  We will wait to see (or hear) the results.

Just to re-emphasise. It can be noisy when new, but improves with use.  It is not an engineering or operational concern.  We would not recommend warming or opening the gearbox to have a look, it would probably do more harm than good.
