Set in the Northern mountain village of Chioufen. A poor gold-miner that has his children calls him "Do-San". Sega loses his job at the failing gold mine temporarily alienates his wife when he takes to spending days on end gambling at mahjong, gets re-hired as a coal-miner. The father eventually jumped off the hospital roof to end his pain.
